They play a pivotal role in achieving the required strength and toughness combination through the mechanisms of grain refinement and precipitation hardening, often in the context of Thermo-Mechanical Controlled Processing (TMCP). Niobium (Nb): Its primary role is grain refinement. Nb forms very stable carbonitrides (Nb(C,N)) that are partially soluble in austenite at the slab reheating temperature. During hot rolling, these fine particles precipitate at the austenite grain boundaries, effectively pinning them and preventing grain growth. This results in a much finer austenite grain structure after rolling. Upon cooling, this fine austenite transforms into an even finer ferrite-pearlite structure. According to the Hall-Petch relationship, finer grain size directly increases yield strength and, importantly, also lowers the ductile-to-brittle transition temperature, improving toughness. This is the most efficient strengthening mechanism. Vanadium (V): Vanadium's primary role is precipitation strengthening (or hardening). V carbonitrides (V(C,N)) are more soluble in austenite than NbCN. They tend to precipitate predominantly in the ferrite phase during or after the austenite-to-ferrite transformation. These nano-scale precipitates create a strong pinning effect on dislocations within the ferrite grains, effectively increasing the yield strength. This mechanism provides significant strengthening without a major detrimental effect on toughness, especially when combined with grain refinement. Often, Q355B is produced using a Nb-V composite microalloying approach. Nb controls the austenite grain size during hot deformation, ensuring a fine final microstructure. V then contributes additional strength through precipitation in the ferrite. This allows steelmakers to achieve the 355 MPa yield strength with lower carbon content, which in turn improves weldability (lower CEV) and toughness. The precise addition levels are optimized by the steel producer based on the intended product thickness and rolling schedule.
